The Ministry of Social and Family Development is working to establish temporary shelters for victims of domestic violence in three regions of the Maldives.
Speaking at a press conference on Monday, Minister Dr Aishath Shiham said the ministry is responsible for providing protection and support to victims of domestic violence. She said one of the main challenges in assisting affected individuals and families is the lack of suitable facilities to relocate them to a safe environment.
To address this, the ministry has begun developing dedicated facilities to provide temporary shelter for victims. According to the minister, construction work is currently underway in Hithadhoo, Addu. She said similar facilities will be developed in Hulhumale and R. Inguraidhoo. A recruitment announcement has already been issued in connection with the Hulhumale facility.
Minister Shiham said addressing domestic violence requires cooperation across society and called for community support in preventing such cases.
She also noted that island councils have now been given specific powers and responsibilities to assist in preventing domestic violence. Under the “Regulations on Delegation of Responsibility to Councils under the Prevention of Domestic Violence Act”, published last September, anyone who reports or becomes aware of a case of domestic violence is required to inform the police immediately.
