The Criminal Court on Wednesday ordered two men previously convicted in the stabbing death of blogger Yameen Rasheed to remain in custody pending a retrial.

Six people were charged by the prosecution in connection with the killing. Of them, two men were convicted by the Criminal Court and later appealed their convictions to the High Court. They are:

  • Ismail Haisham Rasheed, H. Annaarumaage

  • Ahmed Zihan Ismail, Lot 11399, Hulhumalé

After the appeals were heard, the High Court on Wednesday issued separate judgments quashing the convictions of both Haisham and Zihan and ordering a retrial.

Following the High Court ruling, the Prosecutor General’s Office filed a motion requesting that the two men be remanded in custody. The Criminal Court granted the request and ordered that both remain in custody until the retrial is concluded.

Separately, five years after the murder, the Prosecutor General’s Office appealed the acquittal of two of the four defendants who had been cleared by the Criminal Court in 2022. The two men are:

  • Mohamed Dhifran, Sindhubaadhuge/GDh. Gadhdhoo

  • Ismail Rasheed, M. Thaif

The High Court on Wednesday overturned their acquittals and ordered that their cases also be retried.
