Democrats open applications for April council elections
After subsequent discussions and efforts to resolve the differences, most of The Democrats’ leaders rejoined the MDP last year.
The Democrats on Sunday opened applications for members wishing to contest the local council and Women’s Development Committee elections scheduled for 4 April on behalf of the party.
In a statement issued on Sunday, The Democrats said its interim committee had met with the Elections Commission to clarify procedural matters related to the elections.
The party said the opportunity was now open to its members who wish to contest the 2026 local council and Women’s Development Committee elections. The statement also outlined the procedures for submitting candidacy applications.
The Elections Commission opened nominations for the council elections on Saturday. The deadline for submitting applications is 1 February.
The Democrats was formed in July 2023 by members who left the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) following internal disagreements among the MDP leadership during the previous administration. The party was founded by former President Mohamed Nasheed and several of his supporters.
After subsequent discussions and efforts to resolve the differences, most of The Democrats’ leaders rejoined the MDP last year.
