Ghafoor calls for talks with PNC on withdrawing constitutional changes
He called on both parties to discuss restoring the amendments to their previous form.
Abdul Ghafoor Moosa, Interim Chairperson of the Maldivian Democratic Party, has called on the People’s National Congress to engage in discussions to address recent constitutional amendments.
Ghafoor made the remarks during a sitting of the People’s Majlis on Monday, the first session held after the recent elections.
In his address, he stated that the head of state should be accountable for actions within the government and that all citizens should be treated equally under the law.
“I believe that both parties must engage in discussions on the recent constitutional amendments to reach a resolution. Members of Parliament should not be held in a position where they are unable to act independently,” Ghafoor said.
He called on both parties to discuss restoring the amendments to their previous form.
Ghafoor’s remarks referred to an amendment allowing for the removal of a Member of Parliament from office if they are expelled from their party. The amendment was passed in Parliament by the PNC majority.
The recent amendments also include provisions related to the dissolution of atoll councils.
