Shiyam says president took action after election results
He said the party aims to achieve stronger results and that the President had responded to the outcome.
Minister of Fisheries, Agriculture and Ocean Resources Ahmed Shiyam on Thursday said the government had taken action following the outcome of recent local council by-elections.
His remarks were made at a political gathering in Malé to mark the People’s National Congress (PNC) results in the Ha. Muraidhoo Council and Women’s Development Committee elections. Shiyam, who also serves as Vice President of the PNC, said the party’s performance in the elections could be described as a “B-report”.
“Is this a victory? I would say we received a B-report this time. I invite those listening to look back and see which ruling party has managed to secure even a B-report in council by-elections,” he said.
He said the party aims to achieve stronger results and that the President had responded to the outcome. He added that measures were introduced following the results.
Following the elections, ten cabinet ministers resigned. The cabinet was later reconstituted and four new members were appointed. Shiyam was reappointed following changes to ministerial responsibilities.
Shiyam said the President had accepted the outcome and acted on the message from voters.
He also commented on previous administrations, stating that there had been instances where ministers remained in office despite allegations related to state funds.
Referring to voter turnout, Shiyam said participation in recent elections indicates confidence in the system. He added that the government does not interfere with the Elections Commission.
He also referred to a recent Supreme Court decision in which North Hithadhoo Member of Parliament Mohamed Sinan lost his seat, stating that the ruling reflects trust in the judiciary.
Shiyam further noted that the PNC holds a majority in Parliament and has the authority to act within its legislative powers.
