The Criminal Court on Thursday sentenced a foreigner to life imprisonment and imposed a fine of MVR 1.25 million for the killing of a man on a fishing boat six years ago.

The case relates to an incident on 7 March 2021, when a Bangladeshi national, Mohamed Masood, was charged with the murder of another Bangladeshi national, Mohamed Shaheen.

According to the ruling, witnesses stated that a fight took place between Masood and Shaheen on board the vessel. Evidence presented in court showed that Masood held a knife during the incident. DNA belonging to both men was identified on the knife.

The court found that Shaheen died from a stab wound to the right elbow, which led to compression of the lungs and chest and resulted in heavy blood loss. The judgment noted that no assistance was provided to Shaheen after the incident.

Masood was convicted of the offense. The court also consulted Shaheen’s heirs, who requested retribution. The court ordered Masood to serve life imprisonment and to pay MVR 1.25 million as a death penalty payment through the civil court within one year.
