The Elections Commission (EC) on Monday extended the deadline for nominations for the vacant Hithadhoo North constituency by-election.
The EC opened the by-election for the seat on 13 of this month. Applications were opened on 29 of this month. The commission decided to extend the deadline, according to a notice issued Monday.
According to the announcement, the deadline for nominations has been extended to 3 pm on Saturday, 2 of next month. The notice states that candidates have three additional days to submit nominations. The reason for the extension was not stated.
The EC had earlier announced on 13 of this month that the election will be held on 6 June. Mohamed Sinaan is contesting under the PNC, while former Addu Mayor Abdullah Sodig (Soabe) is contesting under the MDP. Both candidates have secured their party nominations.
