Parliament extends sitting amid move against deputy speaker
Under the Parliament’s standing orders, the current session had been scheduled to conclude on Thursday before members entered recess.
The People’s Majlis on Thursday approved a motion to extend the current parliamentary session until the end of May.
Under the Parliament’s standing orders, the current session had been scheduled to conclude on Thursday before members entered recess. However, lawmakers voted to extend the sitting period by 15 days.
At the start of Thursday’s sitting, Speaker of Parliament Abdul Raheem Abdulla said the extension was being proposed due to pending matters requiring parliamentary decisions.
“As there are significant tasks that the People’s Majlis must conclude during this session, I intend to call for a vote to decide on extending the term until May 31, 2024,” Abdul Raheem said during the sitting.
The motion was later approved with 58 members voting in favour and 11 voting against.
The extension comes as the ruling People's National Congress moves to remove Deputy Speaker Ahmed Nazim from office.
A no-confidence motion against Nazim has already been submitted to the People’s Majlis.
