Former President Mohamed Nasheed on Friday warned that he would lead action against state-owned enterprises if employees dismissed for participating in his campaign activities are not reinstated.

Nasheed made the remarks while addressing supporters gathered at Artificial Beach following his victory in the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) chairperson election.

According to provisional results, Nasheed defeated Galolhu South MP Meekail Ahmed Naseem, securing around 68 per cent of the vote.

Speaking to supporters, Nasheed said MDP members would continue to stand for national interests, public welfare and civil liberties.

"The government must not treat anyone unfairly. We will stand firm and ready to launch direct action," he said.

Nasheed alleged that employees had lost their jobs for taking part in his campaign and called for those matters to be resolved without delay.

He warned that if the situation is not addressed, MDP members would take further action.

"These matters must be rectified tomorrow. Otherwise, we will come out. We will occupy the head offices of all those companies located here in Malé," he said.

Nasheed also said the election result had returned the party to its membership and stressed that the MDP does not belong to any individual.

He pledged to work with all sections of the party following the election.

During his speech, Nasheed praised his rival Meekail and highlighted the importance of youth participation in politics.

He described Meekail's campaign as an example for young people interested in public service and political engagement.

"Meekail called me just a moment ago. He is ready to work together with us," Nasheed said.

Nasheed added that he had also contacted former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and expressed his intention to work with party figures following the election.

He further thanked former MDP chairperson Fayyaz Ismail, who campaigned alongside him during the leadership contest, as well as party members who participated in the vote.

The election was held to fill the chairperson position left vacant after Fayyaz resigned from the post in November last year.
