The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has released the final results of its chairperson election, confirming former President Mohamed Nasheed as the party's new chairperson.

The election was held on Friday following the resignation of former chairperson Fayyaz Ismail on 23 November 2025.

According to the final results announced on Monday, Nasheed received 21,063 votes, accounting for 69 per cent of ballots cast.

Galolhu South MP Meekail Ahmed Naseem secured 9,263 votes, while Ibrahim Mohamed, also known as Ward, received 132 votes.

Although Ibrahim Mohamed remained on the ballot, he had announced his withdrawal from the race shortly before voting took place.

The final results largely mirrored the provisional results released after the election, confirming Nasheed's victory without significant changes to the outcome.

Nasheed returned to the MDP last year after leaving the party in 2023 following internal disputes that emerged during the administration of former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.

He previously served as the party's first chairperson from June 2005 to February 2008 and later held the position of MDP president from 2014 until 2023.

Nasheed was also the party's presidential candidate in 2008, 2013 and 2018. In 2018, he was unable to contest the presidential election due to a prison sentence, and the party subsequently nominated Solih as its candidate through a congress vote.

His influence within the party declined during Solih's presidency, culminating in his defeat in the MDP presidential primary ahead of the 2023 presidential election.

Following his return to the party, Nasheed contested the chairperson election with the backing of supporters aligned with former chairperson Fayyaz Ismail.

After the election, Nasheed began a series of meetings with senior party figures, including MDP President Abdulla Shahid, former chairperson Fayyaz Ismail and several city mayors.

The election fills a vacancy that had remained open for more than six months following Fayyaz's resignation.
