MP seeks answers from WAMCO over waste entering Hulhumalé lagoon

Galolhu Uthuru MP Mohamed Ibrahim has requested an explanation from the Waste Management Corporation (WAMCO) over reports of waste entering the lagoon during waste disposal operations in Hulhumalé.
The MP sent a letter to WAMCO Managing Director Mujthaba Jaleel on Monday, accompanied by photographs and videos which he said show waste spilling into the lagoon.
In the letter, Mohamed Ibrahim said waste entering the sea during disposal operations was causing pollution and raised concerns about its impact on residents and the marine environment.
He said protecting Hulhumalé residents from the health and environmental effects of waste pollution is one of WAMCO's responsibilities.
The MP requested details on the reasons for waste entering the lagoon during disposal operations.
He also asked WAMCO to clarify:

Whether waste spilling from transport vessels is the result of operational challenges or negligence.

What measures are being taken to reduce the impact of pollution on the lagoon and marine life.

What long-term measures are planned to address pollution and odour associated with waste in the lagoon.

Whether the Environmental Regulatory Authority (ERA) has taken any enforcement action against WAMCO over the issue.

Whether WAMCO is working with the Housing Development Corporation (HDC) to maintain the cleanliness of the Hulhumalé lagoon.

What steps are being taken to secure waste transport vessels and prevent further spillages.
WAMCO operates a waste transfer station between Hulhumalé Phase I and Phase II. Waste entering the sea in the area is often carried by currents into the Hulhulé lagoon.
To support waste management operations in Hulhumalé, HDC recently allocated a temporary plot of land to WAMCO.
