President says opposition should support policies that benefit nation
During his speech, President Muizzu criticised the conduct of the opposition, saying it does not place the national interest first.
President Mohamed Muizzu has said a responsible opposition should support government policies that benefit the country while offering alternative approaches where it disagrees, alleging that the current opposition does not act in that manner.
The President made the remarks while addressing a People's National Congress (PNC) campaign gathering in AA. Ukulhas on Wednesday night.
During his speech, President Muizzu criticised the conduct of the opposition, saying it does not place the national interest first.
He said that when the government implements measures that benefit the public and the country, the opposition should also support those initiatives.
"Unlike here, in more stable countries or well-functioning, established democracies, both opposition parties and governing parties speak with one voice on issues that benefit the nation—on initiatives undertaken by whichever administration is in office," the President said.
"If those in opposition criticise or present a different perspective, it should be to explain how they would execute a government project even better."
The President said this is how a responsible opposition should operate.
"There is no responsibility whatsoever. They do not put the nation first at all. They do not prioritise sincerity in any way," he said.
President Muizzu also said the actions and records of political leaders are available for the public to assess.
He said Maldivians are well informed and encouraged citizens to evaluate political claims independently.
"It is not necessary at all for any third party to explain these matters to anyone. Everything is very clearly visible," the President said.
He concluded by urging the public to assess any claims that could create division or unrest and to consider whether they serve the interests of the country.
