Former Presidents Mohamed Nasheed and Abdulla Yameen are scheduled to visit GDh. Thinadhoo next week to attend an event organised by the Thinadhoo City Council to mark the 60th anniversary of the island's resettlement.

The event is scheduled for 22 August, with both former presidents invited to attend as guests of honour.

Thinadhoo Mayor Saud Ali told Dhauru on Monday that Nasheed and Yameen had accepted the invitations and were expected to arrive in Thinadhoo on 21 August, a day before the event.

"Both presidents have accepted the invitation," Saud said. "Work is currently underway to finalise the event agenda. Both presidents are expected to deliver speeches at the gathering."

Representatives of Nasheed have yet to comment on the planned visit.

Yameen's People's National Front (PNF), however, confirmed to Dhauru that he had accepted the council's invitation.

A PNF official said Yameen would also travel to Fuvahmulah following the Thinadhoo event as part of the same trip.

"Following the Thinadhoo Council gathering, President Yameen will also visit Fuvahmulah during this trip to hold a PNF party rally," the official said.

The event will commemorate 60 years since the resettlement of Thinadhoo.

Yameen previously visited Thinadhoo in 2016, while serving as President, to attend events marking the 50th anniversary of the island's resettlement.

Several development projects were also carried out in Thinadhoo during Yameen's administration.
