Shahid announces bid for MDP presidential primary, resigns as party president
Shahid said it would not be fair to contest an internal party election while continuing to hold the party’s highest office.

Former Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid has announced that he will contest the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) presidential primary, while also stepping down from his position as party president.
Shahid made the announcement during a gathering held in Addu City on Friday night, formally declaring his intention to seek the MDP nomination for the 2028 presidential election.
Explaining his decision to resign as party president, Shahid said it would not be fair to contest an internal party election while continuing to hold the party’s highest office.
Addressing supporters, Shahid said he would seek to govern in the national interest and provide equal opportunities for all citizens.
“I ask for the votes and support of the general members of the MDP,” Shahid said. “I am someone who can and will work with people of all political perspectives.”
Outlining his vision, Shahid said he would draw on his experience in public service and international affairs to address national challenges. He pledged to deliver results, ensure that party members who contributed to the democratic movement are not left behind, and pursue policies aimed at inclusion and equal opportunity.
He also said his administration would seek to strengthen the economy and create conditions that encourage foreign investment, business activity and international cooperation.
“With the support of our beloved general members, a brand-new dawn and a brand-new day will break for this beloved nation,” Shahid said during his address.
Several senior MDP figures attended the event in support of Shahid, including Vice President Hisaan Hussain, Deputy Chairperson Ahmed Abdulla and former Member of Parliament Reeko Moosa Manik.
Shahid’s entry adds to an increasingly competitive MDP presidential primary race. Former MDP Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail has already declared his candidacy, while former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih is also expected to contest.
The MDP has yet to announce a date for the presidential primary, which is expected to determine the party’s candidate for the 2028 presidential election.
