President inaugurates ‘Vaahaka Vaa’ heritage park in Utheemu

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu on Saturday inaugurated Vaahaka Vaa, a heritage-themed park developed in the wooded area surrounding Kandhuvalu Mosque in HA. Utheemu.

The President officially opened the park during his visit to Utheemu for the National Day celebrations. The project was developed by the Road Development Corporation (RDC).

According to information released during the inauguration, Vaahaka Vaa was designed to present the history of the struggle for Maldivian independence led by Sultan Mohamed Thakurufaanu. The park features illustrated display panels depicting key events and scenes associated with that period of Maldivian history.

The site combines historical information, artwork and the island’s natural environment, providing visitors with an opportunity to learn about the country's past through a dedicated heritage space.

During his visit to Utheemu, President Muizzu also inaugurated the Boduthakurufaanu Memorial Gateway (Boduthakurufaanu Ge Hanthaari Doraashi).

Both projects were developed under an initiative in Haa Alif Atoll focused on preserving sites and memories associated with Boduthakurufaanu. The initiative forms part of the government's efforts to promote awareness of Maldivian history, culture and national identity.

Utheemu holds a prominent place in Maldivian history as the birthplace of Sultan Mohamed Thakurufaanu, who led the campaign that ended Portuguese rule in the Maldives during the 16th century.
