Court closes case after Adeeb pays remaining MVR 1 million fine
Former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih later granted Adeeb clemency during the final days of his administration in November 2023.
The Civil Court has concluded a case filed against former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb after he paid the remaining MVR 1 million of a MVR 2 million fine imposed by the Criminal Court in connection with the MMPRC corruption scandal.
Adeeb was sentenced on 5 October 2020 after pleading guilty to seven charges linked to the corruption scandal, in which more than MVR 2 billion in state funds were lost.
The Criminal Court sentenced him to 20 years in prison and ordered him to pay a fine of MVR 2 million within one month.
Adeeb had previously paid MVR 1 million of the fine. The Attorney General’s Office later filed a case at the Civil Court for a second time to recover the remaining MVR 1 million.
According to a case conclusion report issued by the Civil Court, Adeeb has now paid the outstanding amount.
He paid MVR 100,000 on 11 September 2025 and settled the remaining MVR 900,000 on 13 August this year.
Following the payment, the Attorney General’s Office asked the Civil Court on 19 August to determine that the Criminal Court judgment had been fully enforced. The Civil Court subsequently concluded the case on that basis.
Adeeb’s 2020 sentence followed a plea agreement with the Prosecutor General’s Office over charges linked to the MMPRC scandal.
Under the previous administration, part of Adeeb’s prison sentence was changed to home arrest on health grounds.
