Measles cases in Maldives rise to 242 as outbreak enters 4th month

The number of measles cases recorded in the Maldives has reached 242, more than three months after the disease began spreading in the country, according to the Health Protection Agency (HPA).

HPA, which publishes weekly statistics on the outbreak, said 17 cases were recorded this week. This is an increase from the 10 cases reported during the previous week.
Despite the increase, weekly case numbers remain below levels recorded before 28 July.
HPA said 16,045 people have so far received vaccinations as part of efforts to control the outbreak.
According to the agency, measles can weaken the immune system, increasing the risk of other infections and complications.
Vaccination remains the main measure for preventing the disease. HPA has urged the public to complete both doses of the measles vaccine to reduce the risk of infection and further transmission.
