ACC seeks charges against ex-MPL CEO over MVR 1.08 million AC purchase

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has asked the Prosecutor General’s Office to charge former Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) Chief Executive Officer Mohamed Junaid over allegations that a company linked to him received an undue benefit through the procurement of air-conditioning units.
The ACC referred the case to the Prosecutor General’s Office on Wednesday, according to information released by the commission on Sunday.
The commission has also sought charges against Abdul Wahhab, who headed MPL’s procurement department at the time.
The ACC has recommended two charges against each of the former officials: using an official position or its influence to provide an undue benefit, and acting contrary to the interests of the state in a matter where the state stood to benefit.
According to the ACC, the case relates to MPL’s purchase of 18 air-conditioning units for MVR 1.08 million.
The commission alleges that the units were purchased at a price above the prevailing market rate from a private business linked to Junaid and Abdul Wahhab. It also said the business did not have relevant experience.
The ACC further alleges that the procurement was carried out without a public announcement and without approval from MPL’s board of directors, contrary to procurement rules applicable to state-owned companies at the time.
The Prosecutor General’s Office will decide whether to pursue the charges recommended by the ACC.
