Yameen calls for halt to Eagle Hills' Ras Malé project
He accused Eagle Hills of seeking to work with a government that had lost public support and alleged that the company was engaging in corruption.
Former President Abdulla Yameen has called for the cancellation of the development project planned by Eagle Hills in Ras Malé, claiming that Maldivians strongly oppose the venture.
In a post on X on Sunday, Yameen criticised the government and the UAE-based developer over their plans to undertake the Maldives Waterfront and Marina Project in Ras Malé.
He accused Eagle Hills of seeking to work with a government that had lost public support and alleged that the company was engaging in corruption and attempting to create divisions within society.
Yameen also accused the developer of seeking to establish a Jewish settlement in the Maldives, a claim for which he did not provide evidence.
"A Jewish settlement in a 100% Muslim society that cherishes the Palestinian cause showcases your hypocrisy n depravation," Yameen wrote.
He called for the project to be stopped, saying it was opposed by the Maldivian public.
"You are well advised to scrap ur project. We have nothing but disdain for this project," he said.
The remarks follow discussions surrounding the Maldives Waterfront and Marina Project, which Eagle Hills plans to develop on 500 hectares of land in Ras Malé.
Last Thursday, Eagle Hills Chairman Mohamed Alabbar was asked by Dhauru whether the development could facilitate the entry of Israeli nationals into the Maldives.
Alabbar responded that the company would respect and comply with Maldivian laws, including restrictions on the entry of Israeli passport holders.
He also said there would be no reason to proceed with the development if it did not have the support of the Maldivian people and the government.
Yameen's latest comments add to the criticism surrounding the proposed development, particularly concerns about foreign involvement and the future use of land in Ras Malé.
