Maldives Customs Service has seized foreign currency worth more than MVR 900,000 from an Indian national who allegedly attempted to take the money out of the country without declaring it to customs authorities.
In a statement issued on Monday night, Customs said the money was intercepted at Velana International Airport (VIA) on 7 September as the passenger was preparing to depart from the Maldives.
Customs said the foreign currency, comprising banknotes from several countries, had a combined value of MVR 905,669.80.
The passenger had allegedly attempted to transport the cash out of the country without making the required declaration.
Under Maldivian customs regulations, passengers departing the Maldives must declare cash exceeding the equivalent of USD 10,000, including amounts held in US dollars and other foreign currencies.
Customs said the seizure was made after the undeclared money was discovered during departure procedures at the airport.
