The Ministry of Transport has announced restrictions on the movement of goods transport vehicles and heavy vehicles in Malé and Hulhumalé during designated hours, particularly around school opening and closing times.

In an announcement issued on Thursday, the ministry said the restrictions were introduced to improve road safety for pedestrians and motorists, with particular emphasis on the safety of students and parents.

Under the new regulations, the movement of heavy vehicles and the transportation of goods will be prohibited in areas surrounding schools during their usual opening and closing times on school days.

During the restricted hours, goods transport vehicles and heavy vehicles will only be permitted to operate along Boduthakurufaanu Magu in Malé.

Their movement will be prohibited on other roads in Malé, throughout Hulhumalé, and on the bridge and highway connecting the two areas.

The restrictions apply to vehicles transporting loads exceeding 350 kilogrammes, as well as heavy machinery and vehicles, including forklifts, trucks, cranes and trailers.

According to the ministry, the designated restricted periods are:

  • 6am to 8.30am

  • 11.30am to 1.30pm

The ministry said the measures were intended to reduce risks associated with the movement of heavy vehicles during periods when students, parents and other road users are travelling.

The restrictions are aimed at improving safety and managing traffic movement in the Greater Malé area, particularly during school commuting hours.
