Burials at Hulhumalé cemetery have been suspended after water was found in graves, Malé City Council announced on Saturday.

According to the council, the suspension was necessary after water accumulated to a depth of eight to nine inches in graves being dug at the cemetery.

The council said burials have been temporarily transferred to the cemetery in Malé.

It did not specify how long the suspension at Hulhumalé cemetery would remain in effect.

The decision follows three days of heavy rainfall across the Greater Malé area, which has caused flooding on several roads.

Burials at Hulhumalé cemetery are expected to resume once weather conditions improve and the water subsides.

Similar suspensions have occurred during previous periods of heavy rainfall, when groundwater accumulation made it difficult to prepare graves and place coffins.

The most recent suspension before the current incident occurred in January last year, when water accumulation in graves forced authorities to temporarily halt burials at Hulhumalé cemetery.
