Maldives Customs Service has seized six kilogrammes of synthetic cathinone from an air freight shipment brought into the country through Velana International Airport (VIA).

Customs announced on Monday that the drugs were intercepted on 24 September during an inspection of imported cargo.

According to Customs, officers became suspicious that an air freight shipment contained concealed narcotics and conducted a further examination of the consignment.

The inspection resulted in the discovery and seizure of six kilogrammes of synthetic cathinone, a type of synthetic stimulant drug.

Customs did not disclose the country from which the shipment originated.

The seizure is among operations conducted by Customs to intercept drugs being smuggled into the Maldives through air and sea routes.

Customs officers also detect and seize narcotics sent through postal services and those carried by passengers arriving in the country.
