The government has included plans to develop a designated picnic island in every atoll of the Maldives in its proposed 2027 state budget, Minister of Finance and Public Enterprises Hassan Zareer announced on Thursday.

Presenting the MVR 59.7 billion budget to Parliament, Zareer said the government was prioritising initiatives aimed at promoting healthier communities and improving recreational opportunities for the public.

He said the budget included provisions to develop picnic islands where families and friends could spend time together.

"The budget includes the development of a picnic island in every atoll of the Maldives to provide more opportunities for families and friends to spend time together and relax," Zareer said.

However, the minister did not disclose how much funding had been allocated to the projects under the proposed budget.

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu announced in August 2025 that the government would begin a project to develop a designated picnic island in every atoll.

At the time, the President said the initiative would be launched following a feasibility study and consultations within the Cabinet.

He said the project was intended to provide recreational facilities for Maldivians and improve access to places where families and communities could spend their leisure time.

The inclusion of the projects in the proposed 2027 budget follows the President's earlier announcement, although the government has yet to disclose the individual islands selected for development, the total project cost or an implementation timetable.
