Defence Minister Hassan Rasheed has called on young Maldivians to follow the example of the soldiers who defended the country during the attempted coup on 3 November 1988, saying the nation's history demonstrates the importance of placing religion and national interests above personal ambitions.

Speaking at the official Victory Day ceremony held at Republic Square on Tuesday evening, Rasheed said the Maldives continued to enjoy its independence because of the sacrifices made by military personnel who defended the country in 1988.

He said the Maldivian flag continued to fly over an independent nation because of the sacrifices made by those who risked and lost their lives in its defence.

Rasheed expressed gratitude to Allah for the opportunity given to Maldivian soldiers to defend their country against the attackers at the military headquarters on that day.

Referring to changes in the global security environment, the minister said countries were facing an increasing range of threats and challenges.

He said Maldivians must recognise the country's history as one of the oldest independent states in the region and preserve the lessons of those who defended its sovereignty.

According to Rasheed, the younger generation should remember the sacrifices made by military personnel on 3 November and draw lessons from their commitment to protecting the nation.

"Our history of independence is founded on the determination of Maldivians to remain united under the guidance of Islam. Victory Day reminds us that, following the example set by our forefathers, we must always prioritise the national interest," he said.

"We must place religion and the interests of the nation above our personal ambitions. We must defend our own country. Instead of remaining dependent on any other power, we must work towards standing on our own feet."

Rasheed said the government's defence policy was based on ensuring that Maldivians could independently protect and maintain the country's sovereignty and independence without relying on other nations.

He added that several initiatives were being undertaken under this policy to strengthen the capabilities of the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF).

These included investments and development projects aimed at improving military operations on land and at sea.

The minister said the government was continuing efforts to enhance the country's defence capabilities in response to changing security challenges.

Victory Day is observed annually on 3 November to commemorate the defeat of the attempted coup against the Maldives in 1988.
