The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has approved the retirement of Supreme Court Justice Ali Rasheed, effective 1 December 2026, following a request submitted by the judge.
The JSC announced on Wednesday that it had decided on 28 October to accept Ali Rasheed's retirement request and allow him to retire with honour from the beginning of next month.
The commission said it had initiated the procedures required under Section 17 of the Judges Act to appoint a replacement to the Supreme Court.
Ali Rasheed was appointed to the Supreme Court on 8 September 2020 and has served on the country's highest court for more than six years.
Before his appointment, he served as a judge of the Criminal Court, where he presided over the five-judge bench that sentenced former President Abdulla Yameen to imprisonment in 2019.
Ali Rasheed subsequently applied for a vacant position on the Supreme Court while serving at the Criminal Court.
He was the only applicant for the position at the time and was appointed to the Supreme Court in September 2020.
The JSC has not announced a successor, but said the process of filling the vacancy had commenced in accordance with the Judges Act.
