Concerns have been raised over stray cats mysteriously disappearing and falling sick in the Male region.

The uncontrolled increase in the number of stray cats in Male and Hulhumale is a concern among the public. Despite several attempts, authorities have so far failed to provide a shelter for the strays.

There are concerns that cats that frequent the industrial village area in capital Male -- an area with a high number of strays -- are mysteriously disappearing or falling sick.

"Even today, a lot of cats have disappeared from the industrial zone," said a user on Cataholics Maldives Facebook page.

According to another user, stray cats that frequent Hulhumale beach area are no longer seen from there.

Those who expressed concern in the group said:

  • Cats in the industrial zone area are now very sick

  • Cat lovers go to the area every day to feed the strays

  • Even if they eat, the cats are almost always sick and tired

Some have alleged that a group of people are injuring or killing the strays.

"If they are murdered with poison, the body would have been there. But even a dead cat can't be found there," said another person who expressed concern in the group.

Male City Council had earlier announced that it will set up a shelter to address concerns over the high number of stray cats in Male. However, no further details have been revealed about the shelter, which was to be built in Villimale.

In March last year, the council had opened bids for those interested in setting up a cat shelter at their own cost. However, the council said it did not receive any viable proposals.
