According to the results of Saturday's primary, Shaz got 53% of the votes.

A total of 590 voters cast their votes in the primaries where a total of four candidates were in the fray. That's 70% of the total 844 eligible voters.

  • Salman Rasheed, Maafarivaage/K. Maafushi - 190 votes (33%)

  • Ibrahim Shaz, H. Thaalhafilige/Male - 311 votes (53%)

Earlier, Shaz had unsuccessfully contested the parliamentary primary for Guraidhoo constituency against former transport minister Adil Saleem. Shaz had also contested for the post of president of the party's Guraidhoo constituency held in October 2021.

The parliamentary seat for Guraidhoo constituency, which was held by the opposition PPM, fell vacant after sitting MP Ibrahim Riza, who held the post for the last three terms, died late last month while undergoing treatment for cancer.

The Elections Commission had decided to hold the by-election to the constituency on April 15.

Riza's younger brother Hussain Riza is contesting for the seat from PPM.

Ali Areef, who had worked as a teacher at Guraidhoo School for a long time, is contesting on behalf of the MNP.

The MTD had also decided to contest from the seat on Friday.
