Police have launched an operation to arrest suspects accused of blackmailing local men, including government officials using videos that purportedly show them engaging in same-sex relations.
The case began when videos allegedly depicting Maldivian men having same-sex relations with Bangladeshi MD Alamgiri in an apartment in Male were leaked to social media.
Police are investigating as a separate case the blackmail claims made about the local men seen in the videos.
Police said Sunday that an operation is underway in connection with the alleged blackmailing. However, the police did not disclose any details.
Atoll Times learns that police are currently arresting the suspects in connection with the blackmail case. However, it is not yet known as to how many people have been arrested in the operation so far.
Some of the local men who were seen in the videos have been charged with engaging in same-sex, while Alamgiri has pleaded guilty to all charges of same-sex relationships that were brought against him. He was sentenced to seven months and six days in prison.
The Prosecutor General's Office on Saturday filed fresh charges against him, with 40 counts of creating pornography.
In addition to Alamgiri, the other suspects in the case are:
-
Nazim Sattar, the younger brother of Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed, has been placed under house arrest for three months and 26 days after he pleaded guilty to the charges against him.
-
Former Nolhivaram MP and former DRP leader Mohamed Nasheed; his trial is still underway.
-
Police Drug Enforcement Department (DED) officer Abdul Rahman Rafeeu has pleaded guilty to the charges and is scheduled for sentencing on Thursday.
