A section of K. Maafushi Prison, the main prison in the Maldives under the Correctional Service, has been designated as a remand prison.

Due to lack of space in the prisons operated by the Correctional Service, some convicts are now lodged in police remand jails. Therefore, there is not much space now to be used for operation policing, a senior police officer had earlier told Atoll Times.

In a gazette notification, the Correctional Service said home minister Imran Abdulla has declared wing 1 of unit 2 of Maafushi Prison as a remand jail with effect from Tuesday.

A person arrested for a crime:

  • Will be lodged in a police custodial or remand jail after remand hearing

  • Custodial cells are in Male and K. Dhoonidhoo prison facilities

  • After the verdict, the convict will be transferred to K. Himaafushi or Maafushi Prison
