Parliament on Monday approved a five-day extension to the deadline for presidential election nominations.
An amendment to the Presidential Election Act, introduced by Kelaa MDP MP Ibrahim Shareef on behalf of the government, was passed in parliament on Monday.
The independent institutions committee of the parliament passed the bill with 48 votes in favour. The committee had also decided to pass the bill as proposed by the government without any changes.
As the law used to be:
-
Once the Elections Commission announces the presidential election, it must give a maximum of 10 days to file the nomination papers
The amendment to the law extends the period to 14 days.
The Elections Commission has decided to give the opportunity to contest the September 9 presidential election from July 23 to August 1. That is, a period of 12 days excluding holidays.
