Court schedules back to back hearings in Yameen's graft trial

The Criminal Court has now scheduled hearings in the Fuggiri case for the 2nd, 4th, 6th, 9th, 11th and 13th of next month.

Criminal Court has scheduled back to back hearings after the upcoming Eid holidays in the trial against former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom over the MMPRC corruption scandal. 

The prosecution has charged four people over the lease of R. Fuggiri through MMPRC for development as a tourist resort:

  • Yameen - Acceptance of a bribe and money laundering

  • Ahmed Krik Riza - Being an intermediary in giving a bribe and money laundering

  • Sun Construction - Money laundering

  • Sun Investment - Money laundering 

A nine-day holiday period will begin on Friday and last till July 1, as academic year ended on Thursday and Eid al-Adha falls on June 28. With the extended holiday period, many have already begun leaving the capital to islands across the country.

The Criminal Court has now scheduled hearings in the Fuggiri case for the 2nd, 4th, 6th, 9th, 11th and 13th of next month.

Yameen’s lawyers had requested the Criminal Court to postpone the hearings.

  • The appeal against his 11-year jail sentence in the V. Aarah case is pending in the High Court

  • Yameen wants the appeal to be expedited
