A barge carrying rock boulders for the coastal protection project in the southern island-atoll of Fuvahmulah ran aground the island’s reef on Friday.
Videos circulating on social media since 3pm on Friday showed that the barge loaded with a large quantity of rocks had sunk in half.

The Fuvahmulah city council’s media officer Ibrahim Afleel confirmed the incident to Atoll Times.
“The barge ran aground in the working area near the entrance to the harbour used by the contractor, Hogard company,” Afleel said.
The barge is currently being salvaged, the council said.
