If the Elections Commission (EC) rejects the candidacy of former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom, who is the PPM/PNC candidate nominated to contest the upcoming presidential election, the party will surely win it at the Supreme Court, they said on Sunday.
With only two months to go for the election, the PPM/PNC leadership met the EC on Sunday with complaints of difficulties in meeting their candidate, Yameen, who is currently serving an 11-year jail sentence in Maafushi prison for money laundering and accepting a bribe.
When the opposition coalition’s leadership spoke to reporters after the meeting, journalists questioned about EC chairman Fuad Thaufeeg’s recent remarks to a local media outlet on accepting Yameen's candidacy.
Answering the questions, the PPM/PNC coalition's acting leader Abdul Raheem Abdulla said that the party does not consider a situation where Yameen cannot contest and no member of the party wants to field any other candidate.
He said they will submit the candidacy form as soon as the EC opens nominations.
Abdul Raheem said:
-
There is no obstacle to Yameen’s candidacy
-
If they have to approach the Supreme Court, they will do so
-
The Supreme Court has previously allowed candidates in situations similar to Yameen's to contest
-
Yameen is also confident of winning it in the Supreme Court; Yameen's name will be on the ballot paper
