The Democrats' interim chairperson Hassan Latheef has said on Monday that although it will be difficult to recover the funds embezzled in the MMPRC corruption scandal, a Democrats government would look for and find ways to recover the funds.

Investigating the MMPRC corruption scandal and recovering the funds is an electoral pledge of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.

  • The Asset Recovery Commission, which was set up by the government to investigate the scandal, named 114 people in its report

  • The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) had earlier said that the state lost MVR 1.5 billion in the case alone

  • The Asset Recovery Commission has been dissolved and the ACC is now investigating the case

The Democrats held a press conference on Monday and journalists questioned the party, asking to explain their views on the MMPRC corruption scandal.

Replying to the questions, Hassan Latheef said that the MMPRC corruption scandal involves state officials and MPs and it will be very difficult for the state to recover the funds now.

"Then how do we do that. It will be very difficult. As others say, we can also say that we will recover every coin we lost. But it will be very difficult," he said, pointing out that key evidence required for the cases will now have been lost.

However, the Democrats will find ways to recover the money, he said. As such, he said, it could be entrusted to foreign experts.

Hassan Latheef said:

  • Existing members in The Democrats told the government how to get the money back

  • There are many parties around the world that offer stolen funds recovery services

  • The president will know the details of the people involved in the MMPRC scandal and the money that was embezzled from "A to Z"

  • There are people in parliament and government ministries who are involved in it

The Henveiru West MP added that one of the main reasons why some members of the MDP had to leave the ruling party and form the Democrats was the increase in corruption and theft.
