PPM-PNC presidential candidate Dr Mohamed Muizz has pledged to do a lot of work for the three islands of K. Guraidhoo constituency, with reclaiming the land of Guraidhoo, Maafushi and Gulhi featuring heavily on the list.

Muizz made the pledges while addressing a campaign rally in Guraidhoo on Saturday evening for the September 9 presidential election.

Muizz announced land reclamation as the biggest thing he will do in all three islands.

The projects launched by this government in the three constituencies are not being implemented according to the needs of the people, according to Muizz. That is the case with the Maafushi and Gulhi land reclamation projects, he said.

"The government is being brought for the people. But we don't want to look at what the people want. On September 9, the people have to decide whether to bring a government that will listen to the people and work closely with the people," he said.

Muizz promised to dredge more land in Maafushi and Guraidhoo. He said he would do what the people wanted in his government.

“The dredging of Gulhi will be done soon. Then there is the addition of land to Guraidhoo and Maafushi,” Muizz said.

Muizz, who was the housing minister in former President Abdulla Yameen's government, said the land that Yameen had dredged had not been used for the past five years, and that it remained in utter darkness without water and electricity all this time.

“It was land that was dredged at the cost of millions, but nothing has been reaped off of it," he said.

Other promises Muizz made to the three islands:

  • Guraidhoo: Further development of the port. Construction of a modern school where students will attend two sessions

  • Maafushi: Establishment of first dollar ATM outside Male, road construction and ferry terminal

  • Gulhi: Expansion of port, establishment of waste management system and solving the problem of erosion

In addition, the benefits of the land rent have been transferred to the central government so that the island council does not get the benefits. He said the PPM-PNC government would not leave anything within the jurisdiction of the council without benefiting the council.

Muizz said he promises only that which can be done and his words will meet his actions. He said he learned from former Yameen to fulfil promises to the people.

"When you say you're going to do things like this in rural areas, some people say you're making so many promises. No, not much at all," he said.

"It seems like a lot because things have piled over time, without anything getting done. But there is enough money in the state to do that. It earns revenue. Since the revenue is being wasted away, it seems that it won't be enough. This government has wasted public funds for the last five years and has embezzled it."

Muizz said the Solih government had ‘disappeared billions of Rufiyaa’ during the Covid pandemic. The government has yet to tell us what happened to the money, he said.

“So if the money is spent properly, [the things to do] its actually not much to do,” Muizz said.

He said he would not talk uselessly to mislead the people.

"I'm not going to come up here and talk about things that can't be done. And I'm not going to talk about it without knowing how to do it," he said.

"We will not come here to mislead people and talk uselessly. We will talk about what we can do. [People] should trust us”.
