Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) on Saturday urged people not to harm the environment and animals while campaigning for the upcoming presidential elections.

With just 13 days to go for voting, political parties have been campaigning for the September 9 presidential election.

In a statement, the EPA said the agency has noticed that campaign activities have been carried out in a manner that is detrimental to the country's environment and animals.

"It has been noticed that in some islands, some leaflets, posters and papers used for campaign activities are being put up on protected and old trees with damaging objects such as nails, while animals are sprayed on, and some leaflets, posters and papers used for campaign activities are dumped as garbage on the road," the statement read.

In addition, the EPA said:

  • Large quantities of single-use plastic water bottles are used in various activities and dumped as waste and not managed properly

  • Iron rods are also being erected for the purpose of hoisting flags by digging holes into coral reefs

"We, therefore, urge all political parties and campaign organisers to pay attention to these issues and conduct campaign activities in such a way that such incidents do not recur," the EPA said in the statement.
