Tourism minister Dr Abdulla Mausoom signed up to the ruling MDP on Saturday.
Mausoom, who was appointed tourism minister in a Jumhooree Party (JP) slot, quit the party on August 7.
Mausoom signed up to MDP and handed over the membership form to President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih Saturday evening.
Mausoom had in April announced his support to President Solih's re-election bid in the upcoming presidential election.
Although JP is in the existing ruling coalition, the party declined an invitation from the president to renew the coalition agreement for a second term and has fielded its leader Gasim Ibrahim as its candidate for the September 9 election.
