President-elect Dr Mohamed Muizzu's swearing-in is only a week away. On the day of his swearing-in, he will appoint ministers to his cabinet. The names of the candidates for the posts have now been almost decided. Gathering information from various reliable sources, Atoll Times has prepared a list of the candidates who are expected to be in the new government's cabinet.

This list is subject to change. However, more than three PPM-PNC top level sources confirmed to Atoll Times that this is almost the new cabinet.

Cabinet of 21; 4 new ministries

The number of ministers in the governments formed so far under the new constitution is between 16 and 19. According to information gathered by Atoll Times, a total of 20 people will be in the new President Muizzu's cabinet.

Cabinet figures of previous governments:

  • Former President Mohammed Nasheed: 16

  • Former President Dr Mohammed Waheed: 18

  • Former President Abdullah Yameen: 16

  • President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih: 19

Muizzu has promised during the campaign to change the mandate of some ministries in his cabinet and bring the functions of some ministries under separate ministries. There are three new ministries.

The newly created ministries and those with likely mandate changes are: 

  • Local governance ministry: The ministry will be handed over to PNC Vice President, Maduvvari MP Adam Shareef

  • Youth and technology ministry: Sangu TV Managing Director Ibrahim 'Asward' Waheed will likely become the minister

  • Sports ministry: The ministry will be handed over to rehabilitation specialist Abdullah Rafiu

  • Agriculture ministry: Former state minister of health Dr Aishath Rameela

  • Planning and environment ministry: Thoriq Ibrahim, who held the environment minister's post in the Yameen government

  • Infrastructure and construction ministry: Dr Abdulla Mutthalib (he served as Muizzu's deputy in the Waheed and Yameen governments)

The rest are existing ministries. According to reliable sources, the people who will takeover the ministries are:

  • Home minister: Happy Market CEO, former MNDF Captain Ali Ihsan

  • Defence minister: PPM Vice President, Guraidhoo MP Ghassan Maumoon

  • Attorney General: Vilimale MP Ahmed Usham

  • Foreign minister: Former tourism minister Moosa Zameer

  • Health minister: Former PPM Secretary General and former Nilandhoo MP Dr Abdullah Haleel

  • Islamic minister: Dr Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed, who previously held the post

  • Gender minister: Former education minister Dr Aishath Shiham

  • Tourism Minister: PPM Senator, and PNC chairperson Abdul Raheem Abdullah's son Ibrahim Faisal

  • Economic minister: PNC Vice President, Maavashu MP Mohamed Saeed (he held the same post in the Yameen government)

  • Fisheries minister: PPM Vice-President, Naifaru MP Ahmed Shiyam

  • Finance minister: Housing Development Finance Corporation (HDFC)'s Chief Financial Officer (CFO) Mohamed Dr Shafeeq

  • Transport minister: PPM-PNC campaign manager Mohamed Ameen

  • Housing minister: Dr Ali Haidar Ahmed

  • Education minister: Dr Ismail Shafiu, currently working at the Islamic University (IUM) and former deputy minister of education

  • Higher education minister: Dr Mariya Ali (currently living in New Zealand)

Attempts to reach the PPM-PNC and the president-elect's office for an official statement on the list could not be obtained.
