Maldives to join South Africa's Israeli genocide case at ICJ

Maldives has decided to intervene in South Africa's genocide case against the state of Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ).

At a press conference held on Sunday, the President’s Office announced the cabinet’s decision to join the South African case against Israel.

“The Attorney General was appointed as Maldives' agent in this case,” Nazim said.

The ICJ on Friday ordered Israel to take immediate and effective measures to ensure the provision of humanitarian assistance to civilians in Gaza, and to to take steps to prevent acts of genocide in Gaza but stopped short of ordering a ceasefire. 

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has rejected the ICJ's decision. Netanyahu said he would continue to protect his country and people within the international legal framework.

The UN Security Council is scheduled to meet on Wednesday to discuss the ICJ's interim decisions.

Israel has killed more than 26,000 Palestinians in Gaza.
