Former President and Maldives Democratic Party (MDP)’s Interim President Ibrahim Mohammed Solih has said that the MDP's aim is to win a majority in the upcoming Parliament, and that he could already see it happening.

He was responding to some questions from journalists after observing the voting process in the MDP parliamentary primary held Saturday.

"Our aim is to hopefully take a majority in parliament. With God’s grace, I can already see it happening," he said.

The former president also noted:

  • MDP will launch campaign after the primary; MDP will travel to all parts of the country

  • MDP has always campaigned strategically; it will be evident in the parliamentary elections as well

“Hopefully, as I said, the MDP will get a clear majority in the upcoming 20th Parliament,” he reiterated.

Noting that the voting process for Saturday's primary had gone very well, Solih said this is due to the MDP's planned ahead measures to resolve issues that commonly arise in primaries. Thus:

  • In consultation with the candidates, some constituencies have reached an agreement without going to a vote

  • Many arrangements have been made to ensure the smooth conduct of polling

  • Instead of the party compiling its own voters list, the Election Commission (EC) list was used

“I believe this will make the upcoming parliamentary elections much easier,” he said, referring to the primary process.
