Homeland and Security Minister Ali Ihsan said on Tuesday that the cases of undertrials in custody will be reviewed and those who are eligible would be released.

“We are also working with the prosecutor and the courts to see what kind of cases all the prisoners in the undertrial category are involved in and whether there is any way to grant relief to any of them,” Ihsan said.

Ihsan said:

  • Most of the undertrials are arrested for serious assault, terrorism and child sexual abuse

  • They are currently in custody on court orders because it is believed that they could be a danger to society if released

"However, with the President's special initiative and directive, we are reviewing the cases of those who are already in custody. If anyone can be given further relief, we will do so ensuring there is no harm from them to society,” Ihsan explained.
