Former President Abdullah Yameen has said he does not expect incumbent President Mohammed Muizzu to grant his freedom.

At a meeting held at the office of Yameen's new party, the People’s National Front (PNF) on Sunday evening, Yameen himself asked the question why he had not been released in the past two months.

In the series of meetings, which were conducted on the basis of Yameen commenting on what his supporters said on the podium, he made a lot of comments about the political situation.

At the meeting held on Sunday evening, Yameen, who is currently serving his jail sentence in house arrest, said he did not want to talk too much about his release.

During the presidential election, President Muizzu said he would release Yameen on the first day he took office.

  • Yameen is serving an 11 year jail term under the MMPRC scam, in the lease of V. Aarah

  • The verdict was appealed in the High Court and the case is at final stage

  • The prosecution has another case on-going against Yameen in the Criminal Court

On Sunday evening, Yameen requested his supporters to not talk about his release.

“I just don’t want anyone on this podium to talk about freeing President Yameen, President] Muizzu saving [me],” he said.

Yameen said he has been deprived of even basic rights.

"I am not even allowed the opportunity to speak on a live podium. The people will only know why President Yameen left PPM when I give a TV interview”, Yameen explained.

Yameen said the government is depriving him of the smallest rights when it could have been allowed.

"Then why should I hope for it. I have no expectation that President Muizzu will try to release me. If he does do it, why should he do it today? Why didn't he do it in the past two months?" Yameen asked.

Yameen has asked his supporters not to talk too much about his release.

"Then I will live as I am. I will win the appeal process with the mercy of Allah, because I am innocent”, Yameen explained.

He said the case in court could take a long time. However, he hopes to be released through the judicial process, but does not believe that he can be released because of someone's kindness.
