President Mohammed Muizzu has said that he would not implement the earlier decision to expedite the examinations for school children in the wake of the parliamentary elections.

The parliamentary elections are scheduled for the 21st of next month. However, the government decided earlier this month to expedite the examination as the date coincides with the school children's examination.

The ministry sent a circular to schools saying:

  • The 2023-2024 academic calendar schedules the examination for grades 7,8 and 9 to be held from April 16 to 27, but the date has been changed to coincide with the parliamentary elections

  • The examinations were to be held on official days between 27th of this month and 25th of next month

  • Many parents and students were unhappy with it and expressed concern

In a program on Sangu TV, Dr Muizzu spoke about the change on Friday. According to him:

  • Education Minister Dr Ismail Shafeeu will arrange not to rush the exams

  • Such activities will be arranged in such a way that parents and students will not be inconvenienced, he said

According to the academic calendar, the first term ends on April 30. May 2 to 23 is annual holiday.
