Maldives’ Zakat Fund has decided to help the Palestinian people in Gaza. This is the first time the Zakat Fund has decided to help people outside the Maldives.
Israeli inhumane attacks on Gaza have killed more than 33,000 people so far. Aid is not being allowed into Gaza, causing a humanitarian crisis, and some children and people are dying of famine.
Announcing the decision to donate from the Zakat Fund, Islamic Minister Dr Mohammed Shaheem Ali Saeed said, "We do not want to see our sisters and brothers and children in Gaza dying from hunger."
He said that Maldivians will help Palestinians with everything they can spare.
“This is the generosity of the people of Maldives,” the minister said.
According to him:
-
This is the first time the country’s zakat fund has sent aid outside
-
This is the result of the establishment of a special agency for Zakat in Maldives and the payment of Zakat by wealthy Maldivians to the Zakat House
Maldives Zakat House, a special agency for Zakat, was established last January. The objective is to strengthen the system and develop the Zakat Fund so that the benefits of Zakat are widely available to its beneficiaries.
Maldivians are already helping the needy in Palestine, by individual donations, student bodies and NGOs.
