National Social Protection Agency (NSPA) CEO Heena Waleed has been appointed as the Chief Spokesperson of the President’s Office.

According to the press release issued by the President's Office on Tuesday, Heena has been appointed as the Chief Spokesperson while keeping her job as NSPA CEO.

The statement also said that Heena will continue to serve as the chief spokesperson on an unpaid basis.

Heena has previously held several positions in the Foreign Ministry as Political Director and has extensive experience in the media.

  • Heena has served in Public Service Media (PSM) for a long time and has also served as its Head of News

  • Heena was also the spokesperson of the ruling PNC in the last parliamentary elections

This is the first time a woman has been appointed as the Chief Spokesperson of the President's Office.

The appointment of a senior spokesperson for the President's Office comes three months after the post remained vacant. Thus:

  • The first spokesman of the President’s Office was Mohamed Shaheeb

  • The post has been vacant since he was transferred on December 31

Shaheeb was appointed as a spokesperson on December 13, a month into President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's government took over. Less than a month after being appointed, Shaheeb was removed from the post of spokesperson and appointed as a state minister in the Foreign Ministry.
