Maldives seizes $81,000 in smuggling operation

The Aviation Security Command post also released video and photos of the seizure.

The Aviation Security Command on Sunday  seized more than USD 81,000 from a foreigner who was trying to smuggle it out of the Velana International Airport (VIA).

The Aviation Security Command said in an X post on Sunday that the dollars were seized from the luggage of a Bangladeshi citizen who was travelling to Dhaka on US-Bangla Airlines.

 The luggage contained USD 81,030 (MVR 1.2 million), the post said.

The Aviation Security Command post also released video and photos of the seizure. They show:

  • He tried to get the dollars out by packing them in a box of cornflakes

  • The dollars were sealed in a foil packet inside the cornflakes packaging

  • The dollars were given to him by "someone at the Champa guest house," the Bangladeshi could be heard saying in the video
