Under existing legislation, tax-related offences do not carry prison terms. Individuals convicted of such offences are currently subject to house arrest.

Saleem added that the country faces challenging economic years ahead, and recovering unpaid taxes is critical to managing debt and funding public services.

The proposed changes aim to clarify existing offences, introduce new offences, and revise the penalties applicable to such acts.
