Ex-deputy CEO Shareef interviewed for BML chief

If Shareef is appointed as the CEO of BML, this will be the first time in recent history that a Maldivian will be appointed as the CEO of BML.

Former Deputy CEO of Bank of Maldives (BML) Mohamed Sharif has nominated himself for the vacant post of CEO of the bank.

BML announced an opening for the prestigious post of CEO, following the resignation of former CEO Karl Stumke.

Stumke’s unexpected resignation on September 9 month has triggered speculation, particularly concerning his decision to enforce restrictions on transactions outside of cards issued to Rufiyaa accounts. The government is currently investigating the implications of these restrictions, which some speculate could be a financial coup.

The deadline for nominations for the post of BML CEO expired on Monday.

Reliable sources confirmed to Atoll Times that Shareef was the only Maldivian to apply for the post. He was interviewed on Monday, the added.

If Shareef is appointed as the CEO of BML, this will be the first time in recent history that a Maldivian will be appointed as the CEO of BML. Previously, the position was entirely filled by foreign bankers.

Shareef resigned as Deputy CEO in February 2020 after more than 25 years at BML. He joined the bank in 1995.

In addition to Deputy CEO, he held the following positions:

  • Director of Retail Banking

  • Director of Operations

Shareef holds a Masters degree in finance from the University of Manchester.
