The Bank of Maldives (BML) has announced that Maldivians residing overseas can register through a dedicated portal to access a monthly foreign transaction and ATM withdrawal limit of up to USD 750.

The clarification follows changes announced by BML earlier, which included reducing the foreign ATM withdrawal limit for Maldivian Rufiyaa debit cardholders to USD 125 and introducing a USD 10 fee per withdrawal. Concerns had been raised about whether these restrictions would apply to Maldivians living abroad.

In a post published on X, BML stated that Maldivians living overseas will be able to transact and withdraw funds up to the USD 750 limit in their respective countries, provided they register through the bank’s Foreign Limit Portal. Users must select the specific debit card for which the foreign transaction limit is to be applied.

The bank stated that the update is intended to ensure access for residents abroad while addressing misuse of cards by individuals who are not travelling overseas but are sending their cards for foreign ATM withdrawals.

The announcement comes a day after BML raised the monthly foreign transaction limit for Maldivian Rufiyaa debit cards from USD 250 to USD 500. The bank also introduced up to a 30 percent fee on purchases made on selected international e-commerce platforms, including Temu, Shein, Alibaba, AliExpress, Lazada, and eBay. The decision has drawn concern from customers using these platforms for online purchases.

BML stated that the revised policies are aimed at managing foreign currency outflows and ensuring broader access to essential overseas payments.
